normal is a proscenium staged dance theatre performance with projected technologies.
The interactive live video performance is the first collaboration with Christina Mann. As we abstracted the myth of Orpheus, I found it vital to start with a disruption that simulates the sense of loss and upheaval, for this, I leaned into stop-motion landscapes and distinctive audio. This is followed by a series of "scenes" with varied references to conceptually digging out of the "black hole" of loss (this includes fragments of light, deconstructed text, and sound). In the final act, as the dancer is working to reframe their movement and life, we found it reinforces this through a slightly distorted grid and references being re-grounded, but the path will always have echoes of the experience. The visuals were mostly constructed using Adobe programs (photoshop, audition, and Aftereffects) and then compiled and cued for the performance using Isadora by Troikatronix.
